Indian Orchard Branch Library
Springfield, MA

Children's room

This project restored and expanded a 1909 branch library for the City of Springfield. The renovation included the restoration of an interior stained glass skylight, which had been covered up for the past fifty years, involving removal, cleaning and reconstruction of the stained glass and the creation of an artificial light source above the dome. Paint sampling was done to identify the original color palette, and the main reading room has been restored to the 1910 colors. The original woodwork was cleaned and refinished, and a mosaic floor below the dome was uncovered and restored.

A new 4,800 square foot addition to the rear of the original building provides a new accessible entrance and accommodates a new children’s room, book stacks, and staff areas.
